The Lassen Peak Trail allows visitors to hike 2.5 miles to the top of one of the largest plug dome volcanoes in the world. The Reach The Peak Trail Rehabilitation Project will widen sections of the peak trail to accommodate visitor traffic, construct a new loop route around the crater providing opportunities to interpret geology and scenery while reducing resource damage to sensitive vegetation and install a new evaporator toilet. The final step will construct a trail linking the Manzanita Creek trail to the peak parking lot and improve the Manzanita Creek trailhead parking.
Rural areas attract few hospitals or specialists, and transportation and weather conditions can add to difficulties in getting health care needs met for a population that has higher rates of poverty than cities, says KQED reporters Scott Shafer and Sarah Varney. Join them as they take a road trip down Highway 299, and learn how medical professionals are working to bring quality care to this part of Northern California. The return of Lance Cpl. Tyler Roads to Burney on Friday, July 16, 2010. Marine Cpl. Daniel Dambrowski accompanied his fallen comrade from Dover Air Force Base, Del. More than 200 persons met the plane as it landed at the Redding Airport. A motorcade of some 200 vehicles followed the hearse for 90 minutes as the procession traveled at 40 mph along Highway 299 to Burney. Law enforcement officers estimated the crowd along Burney's Main Street at 2,500, many holding U.S. flags and banners. Roads was shot and killed July 10, 2010, while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C. • Camera operators Ron Harrington, Katie Harrington and Craig Harrington.

Flames from a 41-year-old man attempting suicide by setting himself on fire spread to more than an acre before firefighters contained the blaze Sunday afternoon near Burney. Ly Van Le of Poulsbo, Wash., drove his vehicle to the woods off of Black Ranch Road about 3:30 p.m., doused his vehicle with a flammable liquid, got inside and ignited the fire. He said later he was upset over the break-up with his wife.

A faulty water heater is believed to have caused a fire July 3, 2010, that destroyed a double-wide mobile home and a travel trailer off of Highway 89 near VN Lane. The fire which began about 12:30 p.m. and shown here in raw video did an estimated $57,000 in damage to the structures and contents. Firefighters from Cal Fire, the U.S. Forest Service, and volunteers from Cassel, Old Station, Hat Creek responded. One firefighter sustained heat exhaustion. Traffic along Highway 89 was stopped and allowed to proceed one lane at a time as fire equipment was blocking the southbound lane to fight the fire.

Jamie Pineda grew up in Fall River Mills with seven brothers and sisters. She played guitar and piano in the church choir while also singing in the school choir. In 2007 she joined Sweetbox, a Los Angeles based pop music project formed in 1995 by executive producer Heiko Schmidt and music producer Roberto "Geo" Rosan. Throughout the years Sweetbox has had several leading women including Kimberly Kearney, Dacia Bridges, Tina Harris, Jade Villalon and most recently and currently Jamie Pineda, who won the front singer position after 3,000 auditions were held. Jamie's second Sweetbox album is slated to be released in September. "We Can Work It Out," sung here at the Burney Basin Days queen pageant July 1, 2010, was released to Japan in April 2009. The single had great success in both Korea and Japan, hitting #4 on iTunes Pop Charts in Japan and the country's Billboard Hot 100 at #27.

A retired Burney real estate broker and World War II pilot was selected as the grand marshal for the July 3, 2010, Burney Basin Days parade. Robert O. “Bob” Cook was scheduled to ride at the front of the parade, followed by honored guests - military veterans who have served in the U.S. armed forces. Cook, however, became ill last week and died June 28. He was featured in an Aug. 1, 2007, News story and was a pilot during WWII. The video above shows him reuniting 62 years later with paratrooper squadron leader Martin G. Henzel at the Burney VFW Hall where they reminisced about Cook piloting Henzel and nine other Polish paratroopers behind enemy lines during Operation Market Garden, one of the most disastrous battles of World War II and a battle recreated in the 1977 Richard Attenborough movie, “A Bridge Too Far.”

Clint and Janet Burkenpas and their three children, Emily, Josiah and Jeremiah, spend the night in Burney June 6, 2010, during their three-month-long, 2,000-mile trip on bicycles from Redding to Yellowstone National Park and back. Driving a vehicle and pulling a tent trailer is Clint's mother Shirley Burkenpas of Pensacola, Florida, and the family's 6-year-old pet dog Nicky. Clint plans on updating a blog when he can. A cannon shoot competition was held May 30, 2010, at the 31st annual Pit River Pioneers Black Powder Rendezvous. Among the cannons was a full scale replica 1841 Mountain Howitzer called 'True Shot' and belonging to Carl Rehbock of Fort Jones that lived up to its name and hit the target.

The 31st Pit River Pioneers Black Powder Rendezvous is being held southeast of McArthur - Burney Falls Memorial State Park May 28-31, 2010. In addition to the rifle and pistol competitions held Saturday and Sunday, a canon shoot is scheduled for Sunday, 4 p.m. Watch for the sign on Highway 89 south of the park entrance to locate the rendezvous.

Deputies arrested Christopher Lee Harrison, 29, and booked him into Shasta County jail for alleged possession of stolen property and possession of a meth lab. At about 3 p.m. Sunday, May 23, 2010, agents from the USFS and sheriff's office contacted Harrison and Joseph Ybarra on Jackrabbit Flat Road west of Burney after receiving information Harrison was responsible for stealing a solar panel from the U.S. Forest Service. A search of Harrison's camp trailer that was parked illegally on Fruit Growers Supply land near Burney Creek revealed a large amount of suspected stolen property, supplies and equipment for manufacturing methamphetamine, said sheriff's Lt. Forrest Bartell. Some of the stolen property shown at the end of the video. Property owners are urged to contact the sheriff's department to claim the items.

The Burney and Fall River track teams competed in the Shasta Cascade League finals on May 14, 2010, at College of the Siskiyous. In varsity boys action, Fall River's Nate Gilligan won the the 100-meter dash (11.65) and the 110-hurdles (16.61). Burney's Dylan Ferguson took the 400 (51.77) and anchored the 4x100 relay team with a first place finish time of 45.60. In junior varsity competition, the Burney girls earned a third place team finish. Miranda Gallagher won the 100 (14.18) and 200 (28.54) and anchored the 4x100 relay team with the top time of 55.99. The driver of a tractor-trailer rig was airlifted to a Redding hospital for treatment of his moderate to major injuries he sustained in a crash Monday, May 17, 2010. Traveling north, the big rig drifted off the east side of Highway 89 just south of Bridge campground, hit some lava rocks, and became airborne before striking a tree and more rocks.

Spring Rivers Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and offers an Outdoor Education Program designed to create learning opportunities for students that connect students and adults with the natural world and promote physical activity. The program was designed by local educators and scientists, integrates academic standards with local natural resources and uses real-world science to enhance the fun and relevance of learning for kindergarten through high school-aged students in Shasta County. In 2008, the foundation held its first official outdoor education field trips for about 100 second grade children in the Intermountain area. Now, in 2010, the foundation plans to host field trips for 2,000 students in Redding and the Intermountain area. Here, third grade students from Burney Elementary School spent a morning at Sucker Springs Creek near the Pit River west of the Pit One Powerhouse. Assisting the students were a few of the 60 persons who volunteer as docents. The Burney Veterans Honor Guard held its fourth Echo Taps at the Veterans Wall on May 15, 2010, at the Bailey Street cemetery. Echo Taps commemorates fallen comrades and to promote live buglers. The Fall River Bulldogs secured their Shasta Cascade League title with a two-game sweep of the visiting Burney Raiders on May 7, 2010. The Bulldogs won the fist game 11-2 then went on to take the nightcap 12-2. The Raiders end their season with a record of 3-19. Fall River (18-5) will now prepare to host a Division V playoff game on May 14. The Bulldogs 2010 SCL title is a repeat of last year. The Cardinals softball team forced the 10-run mercy rule in both games with scores of 11-1 and 10-0. The Raiders baseball team played its sixth game in four days, concluding with an 11-4 loss to the Yreka Miners. Burney started April 6 with a Shasta Cascade League doubleheader against Mt. Shasta, dropping both 5-4 and 7-4 at Big League Dreams. The first game applied to the start of Central Valley's 32-team Bass Easter Baseball Tournament. The Burney Raiders played late into the night of April 7, 2010, battling the Inderkum Tigers of Sacramento at the Shasta Lake Bass Classic baseball tournament at Big League Dreams. Alex Courtright threw out three base stealers in the third inning for the Raiders. Burney took a 4-1 lead in the fourth aided by a Macloud Luntey solo blast to center but could not hold on and fell to the Tigers 12-4. The News has obtained additional video from the US Bank surveillance cameras that shows Special Weapons and Tactics teams entering the bank following the fatal shooting of gunman Gregorio Enrique Estrada. Also obtained was radio communication among law enforcement. The first minute of audio is just one example of multiple incorrect bits of information given to law enforcement by persons who claimed they were eye witnesses.

Friday’s action (March 12, 2010) at the Anderson softball tournament at Big League Dreams was cut short due to rain. Fall River competed in two games and finished 1-1. The Lady Bulldogs lost their opener to Anderson 5-0 and defeated Trinity 12-6 before the day came to a halt. Burney was defeated by South Fork (Miranda) 11-5 in its first contest. The Lady Raiders were in the top of the second inning against Portola when the day was called. Burney was matched against Mt.
