Only minor injuries were reported by the two drivers after two big rigs met on Highway 299 just west of the truck escape ramp in Montgomery Creek July 29. Richard Charleston, 30, of Modesto was traveling west about 1:50 p.m. and hauling hay when the load shifted and the hay spilled into the path of an empty eastbound logging truck driven by Patrick Jones, 44, of Fall River. The hay caught fire, caused both big rigs to ignite and also caused about a two-acre grass fire on both sides of the highway. Two helicopters and two airplanes dropped water and fire retardant on the blaze, preventing it from spreading further. The highway was closed in both directions and traffic diverted along Woodhill Drive. The Burney Basin Days Fireworks show, planned for July 5, was cancelled Thursday when it was learned no Cal Fire crews would be available to oversee the celebration. Besides three engines from the Burney fire station, six engines are needed from Cal Fire each year to guard against potential mishaps. Fireworks celebrations planned in Red Bluff, Anderson and other north state locations have also been cancelled, said Burney Fire Chief Raymond Barber. Burney is looking at the option of possibly holding the display later in the year. The decision to postpone the show was decided after the above video was made. Lightning-caused fires consumed more than 5,000 acres locally by Tuesday afternoon at two locations, the first in an area just north of Cassel near Sandpit Road and the second about 12 miles east of the town and burning towards Little Valley. Video and editing by Cody Wagner.
A 150-acre fire thought contained Monday at noon, erupted to an estimated 1,000 to 2,000 acres by 5 p.m. and threatened homes along Sandpit Road north of Cassel. The blaze is named the Venture Fire. "It made a significant run this afternoon with high temperatures and low humidity," said a Cal Fire spokeswoman. Hundreds of fires are burning throughout central and northern California, leaving few firefighters and other resources to battle the flames. All local fires are the result of Saturday lightning storms. More thunderstorms are predicted for Saturday. Video by Cody Wagner and Craig Harrington. Editing by Cody Wagner.
